12 Weeks of Christmas Ornaments Challenge 2020 Week 1: The Basic Star Pattern

Ready to start the ornament challenge? Me too!

So... the other day when I sent out the Frequently Asked Questions email, I asked if you would reply and let me know if you were doing this challenge....

...and we got hundreds (even more than last year!) of replies saying "YES! I'm doing the challenge!" In fact, the yes's are still coming in. It's incredible. I am so excited. I can't WAIT to see all of your ornaments.

We're starting with an easy one: The Basic Star Pattern!

We're starting with this pattern because it's nice and easy. And also, it's awesome. ;)

This is the one that's based on the old-fashioned ‘Quilted Star’ technique that has been around forever and ever. Over the years, I changed it up a tad and put my own little spin on the techniques I use to make it.

And guess what? If you're new to this, you can learn how I make them, for free (yes, FREE). I have a 3-part video workshop, teaching this pattern step-by-step. I'll lead you through it all.... what you need, what to do, and how to finish it. Click RIGHT HERE for the videos.

I did two again this year. (The Basic Star can be made in SO many ways).

The two ornaments below almost look like 2 different patterns, but there are actually only TWO differences: I did a different number of layers on each (one has three layers, and the other has four), andI put the fabrics in a different order. You can also vary this pattern up by simply widening layers, or bringing them closer together.

TIP: Make a layer wider if you've got a fabric with a larger print on it.. so more of that print will show.

That's what I LOVE about this pattern – just change the order of fabrics, or the width between layers, or one of a zillion other details... and you will be able to create totally different looks.

Your turn!

Your challenge is.... to make your own Basic Star Ornament using your 3 chosen fabrics.... you can arrange your fabrics like I have above, or better yet, mix it up!

Remember, if you don't know how to make the Basic Star, you can learn it for free right HERE.

Then, show me what you've got by posting it on Instagram using the hashtag #OrnamentGirlsChallenge so we can all see it!

(And, if you're an Ornament Girls Club Member, please post it in our private FB group!)

I'll see ya in a week, with Challenge Pattern #2.

Happy Ornament-ing!

Staci Ann

p.s. If you bought your foam ahead of time based on the Supply List I gave you, this week uses an 8-Lined Ball. But, don't worry if you don't have a pre-lined ball... this one can either be done without lines, or you can draw your own.)

p.p.s. Here are Monica and Darlene's Week #1 ornaments!

They all look so different it’s hard to believe they are all the basic star pattern. Staci, your colors remind me of old pastel ornaments. They’re all lovely. Looking forward to getting my foam today, so says the USPS, so I can begin the challenge.

Isn’t it just amazing how different they can look depending on the fabrics used? I hope your foam arrives for you today!

I am not that familiar with Instagram so I hope my picture went through

Instagram is a lot of fun but can be a bit confusing when you’re new to it. You’ll want to sign up for an account if you don’t already have one, and then post the picture with the hashtag so we can find the picture. I hope that helps? Have a great day!

Am I part of the club? If not, how do I join to get a kit each month? I tried to log in but didn’t work. Thanks

Hi Jacki, would you be able to email us about this? https://ornamentgirls.com/contact/ I don’t see an email associated with this comment and we need your email to look into this for you. If you’d please send us an email, we can look into this for you. Thanks!

These ornaments are lovely! Don’t know how many of the challenge I’ll get done but I sure enjoy looking! Don’t do Instagram so that’s a bummer!

Love making these ornaments. Question: I have several “jelly roll bundles” of 2.5 inch wide strips of fabrics. Would these work for making the ornaments? Thanks.

Hi, love doing the ornaments each year! Are you sending an email this year again?

  9. Tina D Hurley on September 28, 2020 at 6:39 pm

Can you use the jelly roll type bundles for these projects? They are 2.5 inches wide. I love making these. Thank you

Love the ornaments! Are the snowflakes on the fronts in the shop? I love them and looked through the embellishment section and couldn’t find them.

How can I submit what I made if I am not an OG Girl or use instagram?

    • Janelle - Ornament Girl Support on October 2, 2020 at 9:39 am

Hi Theresa, you’re always welcome to email us the pictures so we can look at them that way. You can find our contact page here: https://ornamentgirls.com/contact/ We’d love to see your ornaments! Janelle

No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to get my centers even. What am I doing wrong? Or, is there a way to score or mark the ball so I can be sure my spacing is correct.

    • Janelle - Ornament Girl Support on October 2, 2020 at 9:43 am

Hi Robin, would you be able to send us a few pictures of your ornament so we can see what’s going on? That would be helpful to see what’s going on and help you. Thanks so much. https://ornamentgirls.com/contact/
