12 Weeks of Christmas Ornaments Challenge 2023 Week 9: The Windmill Pattern

Can you believe we're already at Week 9? This week, we're going back a few years to....

The Windmill Pattern.

This pattern is slightly more advanced, but by that, I do NOT mean it is difficult – it is actually far easier than it looks. It just requires taking your time. It really begins to make sense once you get going.

And then, just be warned... you'll want to make lots of them, because the end result of this pattern is spectacular.

Just like most of our patterns...  you'll get a step-by-step video tutorial AND a full-length eBook showing each step in detail, with photos.

(Oh, and guess what? We've recently updated the video tutorial for this pattern!)

Darlene's adorable Windmill ornament:

Your turn!

Your challenge is.... to make your own Windmill ornament using your 3 chosen fabrics.... have fun creating your color combo!

p.s. If you bought your foam ahead of time-based on the Supply List I gave you, this week uses an 8-lined ball. (Don't worry though, if you don't have a pre-marked ball... we'll show you how you can easily mark your own.)

Did Tanya make this week’s challenge ornament? Her designs haven’t been showing up the past couple of weeks. I’m all about Halloween and really enjoyed her ornaments!

Hi Gerrie! Tanya made the frosty blue one up above, but she only did the Halloween ones up through October. But I know she LOVES Halloween too, so maybe next year, she’ll keep it going!

If have pattern already, will it be update with new information?

    • Sarah Cinocco on November 26, 2023 at 2:09 pm

Hi Elaine, yes, any time we updated a pattern, you won’t need to purchase it again. The Windmill pattern has already been updated with the new video so you should have access to that on your workshop page.

I love the look of this ornament! This design looks very similar to the Red Velvet Cupcake (January 2019). If I have access to the cupcake pattern, is there a big difference that I would need to purchase this pattern?

    • Sarah Cinocco on November 26, 2023 at 2:08 pm

Hi Loraine, we did use the Windmill when creating that kit so you could follow those directions. You will not have the steps to match up the sides when making side two since the Windmill pattern was only used on one side of the cupcake, but it will definitely get you started!

Hi Staci, I have been using the egg-shaped product to make pine cones with scrapbook paper. I have tried the regualr cotton fabric, but t’s too thick once you fold the two” square twice. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you. Robin

    • Sarah Cinocco on November 27, 2023 at 12:04 pm

Hi Robin, I’m so sorry you are having some trouble pinning your fabric! Are you finding that it is too hard to push into the foam? You can try working with some thinner fabric, or avoid things that might have glitter, which may make it too stiff. If you are using the brand “Smooth Foam” eggs, those can also be really hard to push pins into, so I would recommend using one of our soft foam eggs. If you continue to have trouble, please reach out to us via email and we’ll be happy to help!

In your patterns do you include how to make the bows on top ?

    • Sarah Cinocco on December 13, 2023 at 12:07 pm

Hi Mindy, yes! Our patterns do include a bow tutorial usually. We also have a couple of different bow options you can find here: https://ornamentgirls.com/ebooks/bows/
