We're beginning the 2023 Ornament Girls Challenge soon!
In order to make all 12 ornaments, you will need...
1. About 2 to 2-1/2 yards EACH of three different fabrics (this is a generous approximation - you may use slightly different amounts depending on how you arrange your fabrics on your own ornaments. We've been told each year that many of you have some left over when you start with this amount, but we're just trying to err on the safe side.)
****I recommend 3 fabrics that contrast highly with each other.****
2. A LOT of straight pins. I would go ahead and buy yourself a nice big one pound box from HERE.
3. Foam. Okay, so during the first few challenges, I didn't give this info out ahead of time (because I didn't always have the whole thing planned out that far in advance lol).... but right now, I can give you an almost-definite foam list for the first 11 weeks.
But, as we've done every year, the 12th week will coincide with our big bundle of NEW PATTERNS - and just like last year, there will be SEVERAL new patterns to choose from.
And of course, I have no idea which patterns you'll pick, or if you'll even want to purchase the bundle at all (but it's awesome, so I think you will!)
So, let me break this down for you the best I can...
(Note: All of the lined-ball recommendations below can be drawn on by you! Due to ever-changing supply availability, we may not always have our pre-lined foam available each week. But, we DO have all the resources to show you how to do this yourself.)
Weeks 1-11, you'll need:
- 5 - 3" Balls (where 8 lines would be very helpful)
- 1 - 3" Balls (where 6 lines would be very helpful)
- 1 - 3" Balls (where 5 lines would be very helpful)
- 1 - 3" Balls (where 4 lines would be very helpful)
- 2 - Large Hemi
- 1 - Disc
Week 12: ANY (or all) of the following:
- 2 - 3" Balls (where 6 lines would be very helpful)
- 1 - 3" Balls (where 5 lines would be very helpful)
- 1 - Wedge
- 1 - Cube
(Wait til you see this year's Bundle! We DO plan to have another special Foam Bundle available in December for this.)
4. Whatever embellishments you'd like to use for all 12 ornaments.
5. Each week's pattern (hint: the first week will be the FREE Basic Star pattern)
What if you don't yet own each week's pattern?
I don't want to leave anyone out, so in order to make this as accessible as possible for everyone to make along with me, each week's pattern will be available at a very special deal!
The special price will be for one week only, on that week's pattern. I'll send you a link to each week's special deal when I send you your weekly challenge email.
Also, please note, that the first week's pattern is FREE.
Be sure you're on my email list so you can get each week's Challenge Email! Each week's email will say 'Ornament Challenge Week #' in the subject line so you can spot it easily!
(If you've never tried one of our patterns before.... they are FOOLPROOF. And many of them come with full-length videos, too. So, no worries.. you WILL be able to make these ornaments along with me. :) )
So.. will you join me for this? Comment below and let me know.
It's gonna be fun!

I’m ready! I got my fabric and foam on Saturday!
I’m in! Wouldn’t miss it.
My first time to do the challenge. I’ve done the first ornament to check out my fabrics. QUESTION – I have not yet done an ornament with a hemi. This list says 2 large hemis. Are there different sizes? I have some that are the 3″ size cut in half…..
Hi Debra,
We do carry two sizes of hemis in our supply shop. The large hemi measures 4″ across the flat side. You can find our hemis here: https://theornamentgirl.com/market/product/smooth-foam-half-round-hemi-ball-large-4-inch/ I hope that helps get you started! Happy Ornament-ing!
I did not see my name. I want to do the challenge.
Hi Carole, I checked on my end and I can see you are signed up for the emails. You are good to go. We hope you enjoy making your ornaments!
Can’t wait.

Life has other challenges for me last year but I cannot wait to do this this years challenge! (And maybe complete last year’s while I’m at it!)
I hope I’ve ready signed up for this challenge, but looking at my email today I have not received the first weeks ornament challenge email.
Count me in I am new this year.
I’m definitely in! Just need to go find some fabric now! Lol!! Looking forward to the challenge!!
I didn’t think I’d have time, but now I want to try. Going to go see what fabrics I have or if I need to buy some.
Will the 3 inch balls with five line markings be coming in soon? If so, I will need two!!
Brenda Steeley
Hi Brenda, I am so sorry about the 5 segment balls being out of stock! We do have more coming soon, but I don’t have an exact date I can give you. In the mean time, we do have a free guide that will walk you through how to mark your own ball. I hope that helps! https://ornamentgirls.com/how-to-divide-your-ball-into-5-segments/
Started week 2. I’ve been loving this so far. I actually went and got 6 more yards of fabric to do a matching set for my daughter (21) and son (18) so when they leave home they will have a start. I keep watching for 5 segment balls because marking the first one was… challenging for me. I’m glad to see they are coming back. I will keep watching before I make my kids’ Western Star. Thanks for doing this. I enjoy feeling like I’m making them with people. I love seeing everyone’s creativity. I just discovered these ornaments in September of this year, so it’s my first challenge. Just wanted to say thank you!
Oh wow Tammy, you have your work cut out for you! I hope you are enjoying making your ornaments so far! To address the 5 segment balls, we do have our unmarked balls in our supply shop that work perfectly with our free guide or tape measure guides. I hope one of those options will work for you until we are able to restock our 5 segment balls.
