We're about to begin the 2022 Ornament Girls Challenge!
In order to make all 12 ornaments, you will need...
1. About 2 to 2-1/2 yards EACH of three different fabrics (this is an approximation - you may use slightly different amounts depending on how you arrange your fabrics on your own ornaments. You can get a little extra if you want to be on the safe side!)
****I recommend 3 fabrics that contrast highly with each other. (I've got some examples at the end of this post)****
2. A LOT of straight pins. I would go ahead and buy yourself a nice big one-pound box from HERE.
3. Foam. Okay, so during the first few challenges, I didn't give this info out ahead of time (because I didn't always have the whole thing planned out that far in advance! lol).... but here's the thing. Right now, I can give you an almost-definite foam list for the first 11 weeks.
But, as we've done every year, the 12th week will coincide with our big bundle of NEW PATTERNS - and just like last year, there will be SEVERAL new patterns to choose from!
And of course, I have no idea which patterns you'll pick, or if you'll even want to purchase the bundle at all (but it's awesome, so I think you will!)
So, let me break this down for you the best I can...
(Note: All of the lined-ball recommendations below can be drawn on by you! Due to ever-changing supply availability, we may not always have our pre-lined foam available each week. We have all the resources to show you how to do this yourself.)
Weeks 1-11, you'll need:
- 5 - 3" Balls (where 8 lines would be very helpful)
- 4 - 3" Balls (where 6 lines would be very helpful)
- 1 - 3" Balls (where 5 lines would be very helpful)
- 1 - Bell (well, that totally gives away one of the patterns, doesn't it?)
Week 12: ANY of the following (or, all of them!)
- 3" Ball with 6 lines, OR...
- a Cube shape, OR...
- a Wedge shape, OR...
- a Star shape, OR...
- One more that is secret for now: We have a new shape coming soon to our OG Shop!
(Wait til you see this year's Bundle! We DO plan to have another special Foam Bundle available in December for this.)
4. Whatever embellishments you'd like to use for all 12 ornaments.
5. Each week's pattern (hint: the first week will be the FREE Basic Star pattern)
What if you don't yet own each week's pattern?
I don't want to leave anyone out, so in order to make this as accessible as possible for everyone to make along with me, each week's pattern will be available at a very special deal! (and some of them are free!)
The special price will be for one week only, on that week's pattern. I'll send you a link to each week's special deal when I send you your weekly challenge email.
Also, please note, that the first week's pattern is FREE.
Be sure you're on my email list so you can get each week's Challenge Email! Each week's email will say 'Ornament Challenge Week #' in the subject line so you can spot it easily!
(If you've never tried one of my patterns before.... they are FOOLPROOF. And many of them come with full-length videos, too. So, no worries.. you WILL be able to make these ornaments along with me. :) )
Happy Ornamenting!

I’m so happy to hear about the challenge! I love to see everyone’s version-I learn so much. The bundle at the end is always, always amazing! Thank you so much for putting these events together. :)
This is the event that hooked me last year! Now I can’t wait to be a real part of the fun! Thanks so much for the work you put into detailing the directions and videos for us to use to follow and learn! Love this site and the fun you create for us??????????
Awesome, I can’t wait. I hope that I can keep up this year.
Thank you for all your hard work.
I’m in, really looking forward to this challenge!
So excited to start!
I love everything, I’m very excited about this. although I don’t fully understand the language ?? it doesn’t matter I know I’ll love it!
Okay, question. I paid, now I want for link to each week?
Hi Lisa, I wanted to let you know I have sent you an email to help explain a little more. Have a wonderful day!
Looking forward to it! I hope I can keep up.??
Can we buy the foams needed for challenge through you? If so how? For any patterns that need to be purchased can we buy them each week?
Hi Melanie, you can find all the foam we have available here: https://theornamentgirl.com/market/product-category/ornament-supplies/foam-shapes/
We don’t currently have all of the pre-lined foam balls in stock, but we do have free guides that will help you mark your foam. Each week the pattern will be announced, and if you don’t already own it, you will be able to purchase it on sale to add to your collection. I hope that helps!
Thank you
Getting really excited for this now xx just like a child in a toy shop ??
I am very happy to take part in the challenge, this will be my first year. Very excited.
I’m really looking forward to this challenge. Thank you for including me.
When I go to the shop to buy 6 lined 3″ balls, they aren’t even a choice. Why is this? I know I can mark my own balls, but the pre-lined ones are so much more accurate and easy.
Hi Melanie, I’m so sorry that we are out of stock of the 6 segment balls right now. I know that the pre-marked foam balls are more convenient, but I hope that the ball marking videos will help until we are able to restock those!
Hi Sarah, I will be cutting my own wedges because I can’t find any here, could you please give me the measurements, length top to bottom, width @ bottom only and depth … I have 1″ thick foam sheets. Thanks so much
I’m just starting to lean how to make the Christmas balls, so I would really like to buy the balls that have the lines on them. I have a vision problem so I think having then on the ball and not having to do it myself would help. Do you sell them?
Do you sell the line balls? I have a vision problem and I think it would help me if they where on the ball with out we having to do it. I’m just starting to lean how to make one. Thank you
Hi Stacay,
We do have lined balls in our supply shop! You can see everything that we have in stock right now here: https://theornamentgirl.com/market/product-category/ornament-supplies/foam-shapes/
It’s good to check back often because we do update our supply shop as we can. Happy Ornament-ing!
Starting late as I just found this. Hopefully I will be able to get the patterns from the earlier weeks. These are gorgeous!
Will there be a foam bundle like the last couple of years? Staci said something about a new shape. Any idea when it will be available?
Will the star foam shapes come back in stock soon?
Hi Janice, we’re so sorry about the star being out of stock! We don’t have an exact date on when they will be available again, again, I’m so sorry!
