I have been meaning to make some NFL themed ornaments for probably 3 years now. Not even kidding…I bought a huge stash of NFL fabric in every team forever ago, and it has just been sitting there looking at me ever since. Though I have really WANTED to…I could possibly have a couple of new best sellers on my hands!

Anyway, I am happy to say that thanks to a custom request for a Baltimore Ravens ornament, I have finally made one, and I must admit, it came out pretty awesome! So thank you to Jennifer, for kicking my you know what into gear on these! (and for being so patient!)

I decided to do a pattern of the Ravens fabric and purple around a 3″ ball. Right from the get go, I started having difficulties, because there were two different logos on the fabric, and they were different sizes, meaning I had to…measure (gasp!). It’s simple stuff, I know, but I am NOT good at math. My brain just doesn’t work when it comes to anything mathematical, and that has been a real issue for me with drawing myself patterns for this style of ornaments. Anyway, I got to work measuring each logo, and how much of the fabric I wanted showing on the ornament. The Raven head logo was the largest (and I must say, I have never noticed the creepy red eyes on that thing before…yikes!):

Ravens Logo

I decided that I would place the logos on the ball in 4 sections. In between each logo piece would be a piece of coordinating purple fabric. This sounds easy.  I assure you that it was not. For me.  It required measuring the ball, and even subtraction. I had to ask my son for help. (yes…I AM math.)

Once that was worked out, I marked my sections on the ball:

Marking my sections

Drew my lines, labeled my sections (because I knew I’d forget!), and cut it out:

Now onto drawing myself some patterns for cutting out the fabric. Using the measurements I already had and adding a little extra, I drew myself some patterns. And these babies will be going into the fireproof vault along with the birth certificates and passports.

I have no idea how I managed it, but perfect!

and it fits!

and it fits...high five!

Okay, so I added the rest of the pieces of fabric, then made a hanger out of black seed beads.  And here it is, all finished:

I have all 32 football teams (there are 32, right?)…so if you would like a specific team, just let me know! I’m sure I can find fabrics in college football and other sports too…just ask!

Oh yeah…”This ornament is made using licensed NFL fabric; however, I am not affiliated with the NFL in any way.” (Just in case you were wondering :D)

What a great looking ornament! Are you selling these in your Etsy shop? I think you would do a great business. And colleges and universities…! What about baseball and basketball? Now you’ve done the math, the biggest limit is probably access to the fabric. Good luck!

Thank you! Yes, this one is available in my etsy shop, and I will hopefully have a few more available soon. I did a few more customs for other teams over the holidays, but never had the chance to get pictures done. And I definitely want to add other sports eventually too! :D

Hi Wendy…. I haven’t yet, but it’s very similar to the Moonlight pattern (which is free at the top of this page). The difference is that the 6 fabric “sections” in the Moonlight pattern just need to be adjusted to fit the logo size on the fabric you use, 2 of them are wider, and the other 4 are thinner.. I hope that helps!
