I've had lots of people asking me how to do the personalized embroidery that I've been using lately in my Snow Globe ornaments.

Since I am now officially completely addicted to machine embroidery, I am happy to show you!

I am so excited about this embroidery thing because it opens up so many new ideas for your ornaments. You can personalize with names, dates, monograms, teams, logos, EVERYTHING. You can make gifts for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Baby's 1st Christmas, 1st Christmas married.... you get the idea.

I made this ornament for my daughter's 12th birthday.

If you are a seasoned machine embroiderer, you will probably already know how to do all this stuff. :)

But, if you're brand new, I hope this post will show you how easy it is! I am a beginner, and I was able to get myself up and running in no time.

Easy, yep. But, inexpensive? No, this hasn't exactly been my thriftiest endeavor. (Worth it, though!)

Here's what I'm using:

With that being said, I am loving Embrilliance so far. I hesitated to buy it and researched several embroidery softwares for a couple of weeks before I decided to go ahead and try it, and I've got no regrets. I am a ditzy type, and I'm happy to report that Embrilliance seems to be ditz-proof!

I made a video to show you how I'm using it to personalize my embroidery pieces for ornaments:

After I made this video, I finished stitching out the design, and here is how it came out (I'll post a picture of the finished ornament as soon as it's done!):

Here are the links I promised in the video:

Here are some places that sell fonts in the .bx file format, which is the format that you can add to Embrilliance to make using text so easy:

And, here is where I bought the beautiful "Joy" design in the above ornament: Embrotique. (It uses the same calligraphy alphabet, and it fits on a 3" Snow Globe ornament.)

Last but not least..... if you don't yet make these ornaments, here is where you can get my Snow Globe ornament pattern (which now includes a free Snow Globe "Look Book" that will give you ideas for making your own ornaments for lots of holidays & special occasions throughout the year). :)

Ornament personalized with a date.

Personalized with a date.

(p.s. Here's an amazing deal I found on Amazon for embroidery thread. I took a chance and bought it.... and it's awesome. Plus, now I think I have enough thread to last me the rest of my life. :D)

(p.s. again: If you have zero interest in making your own embroidery, I am just beginning to offer some custom pieces in my shop..... more options will be added as I can!)

Love your ornaments. What creativity you have. Going to make every member of the family one for next Christmas. We have a large family so for 2016 I have a plan.

Don’t have an embroidery machine, but do love to cross stitch. So I can plan my pattern, how big is the snow globe opening?

        Thanks!

        • Staci Ann Lowry on June 11, 2019 at 3:21 pm

Hi Valerie… You can actually adjust the opening as needed to fit your image, but I generally keep my image size at about 1 to 1-1/2″ and that means the entire opening is about 2″ or so.

I have the same software, You do not have to drag each letter. The software allows you to upload fonts. Then you just type out your names. YouTube has a lot of videos showing how to do this. ?

For embroidering on the middle, do you have measurements? I am a new embroidery person that’s the part I struggle with the most.

            • Sarah Cinocco on June 26, 2023 at 9:47 am

Hi Retha, it will sort of depend on your design, but as a general rule of thumb, you should try to keep the design no larger than 2″. The larger the image, the hard it will be to smooth out the fabric and hide any wrinkles. If you find you need a larger image, you may want to use a hemi.

hi, after several attempts i finally got the video to work. not sure if this is happening to anyone else, but i just thought i’d let you know. thank you!

    • Staci Ann Lowry on September 17, 2015 at 9:03 am

Hi Barbara…. I’ m sorry about that! It turns out that there was an issue with the video yesterday. I’m glad you were finally able to see it. Thanks so much!

  5. Cindy on October 4, 2015 at 11:42 pm

I cannot view your video. I can hear the audio, but the video is not visible. All I can see is what appears to be a screen shot of your computer screen, which has some lovely flowers on it. But I would really like to see the video, too. Any clue what is going on? Thanks.

    • Staci Ann Lowry on October 5, 2015 at 8:19 am

Cindy, can you tell me what browser you’re on? (Internet explorer, Firefox, etc?) That will help me try and troubleshoot.

One other thing, sometimes clearing your history and then refreshing the page makes it work. I am not sure why, but that has worked for a few other people.

In the meantime, I’ll try and figure out what might be wrong here on my end, and I’m sorry about that!

I also just got an embroidery machine recently, and have the same plans!
Haven’t made it as far as you have, but I have all kinds of ideas going through my head for more ornaments!
I have the fabric, the thread and the machine – what I need is space and time! ;-)

    • Staci Ann Lowry on October 5, 2015 at 8:20 am

Yay, that’s awesome Beth! The possibilities are endless!

I like the look of the quilted ornament but I also like the embroidery look for the snow globe. My thought is that you can combine the two looks by embroidering on the strip that goes around and covers the edges. It would take a little time to figure it out to do it on a one piece strip but you could also divide that strip in two and cover the bottom join with a tassle or beaded cap. I’ll post one when I try it :)

    • Staci Ann Lowry on October 20, 2015 at 3:51 pm

Loraine, that is an awesome idea. Thank you and yes, please post a picture of what you come up with! :)

You might check out Embroidery Library to see if they have your format. I have purchased a great deal of designs from them and have never been disappointed. They have great sales! I have eight grandchildren and make each one something special for Christmas (I leave the toys to Santa). This year, each one will receive a personalized snowglobe ornament in their favorite colors or theme, like Mickey Mouse. Thank you so much!

Hello Staci, I sent you an earlier email regarding the embroidered ornaments. I just check this email to see
you indeed have a price. The style I need is the CALLIGRAPHY custom name. Can you send this out to me.
    Savon Jr. is the name.
    Thank You,
    Lynn.

Hi Lynn… Just checking with you that you got my latest email? Thanks :)

Can you adjust the stitching from thicker to thinner and thinner to thicker…. like if in spots if it’s not even? Or if you think something is just too thick can you control the stitching count? And on the bow could you have had the hanging ribbon a different color and the wrap-a-round tie part? Or is that particular avatar one piece and unable to divide up like that?

You mention size in the video, but you don’t say what is the largest size the finished embroidery should be. Can you give that information, please?

Hello there: I just love these ornaments. I think I have figured out to make them, but I would like the pattern from you. I don’t order online. Is there a way I could send a cheque to you to order the pattern? $10.00 isn’t it?

I have embroidered my grand kids names and the year (next year) onto fabric. Now I want to know how you get the fabric to mold around the balls before adding the points around the name.
I am using 3″ balls and have the text centered on a 4″ square of fabric. I plan on putting their picture (printed on fabric) on the other side. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!
I like to do these the year before while I’m in the Christmas spirit, but not rushed, LOL!

    • SUSAN GARDNER on December 27, 2016 at 7:52 pm

Well, I guess I should have looked more carefully. I see that probably everything I need to know is in your snow globe pattern, which I have so I’m off to a good start!
      Thanks,
      Susan
