staci-ann-magazine-feature

About 14 years ago, I put a few of my handmade folded fabric ornaments up on eBay to see if I could make a little extra Christmas money.

I had no idea that this one simple thing would one day turn into an ornament club with over 3,000 members!

My adoration for making these fabric ornaments goes way back to when I was about 15 years old. One day my mom came home from the Ben Franklin craft store (remember those?), where she'd just seen a demonstration for making "quilted" ornaments. She'd brought home bags of supplies, and she, my sister, and I sat around for the rest of the afternoon, folding and pinning our hearts out.

I kept making them through the years. When I got married to my Marine love, we were pretty broke (we were young, and he was a Private) ..... so I started making my ornaments with any material I could get my hands on, even cheap dollar store ribbon. I loved making them so much that sometimes I would even take my old ornaments apart, just so I'd have pins and another styrofoam ball to use for the next one.

(This is how I learned lots of little ways to save on pins and materials. I made everything stretch!)

Right after I started my tiny business (okay....hobby) selling my ornaments online, tragedy struck our family. I became a widow and single mom of 2 very young kids. Not wanting to immediately put my kiddos in daycare so that I could go back to work, I decided to see if I could find a way to make my little ornament business support us.

That's when the beginnings of this site that you're on now took shape. Now you'll find not just ornaments for sale, but also our Ornament Girls Club (a monthly pattern/kit club!), along with tons of different quilted ornament patterns.

I hope you enjoy making these ornaments as much as I do! Just, be careful....they are addictive. Just wait until you find yourself folding every single material you come across into little triangles to see how it will look on an ornament. :)

I really appreciate you being here.

I'm Staci Ann, and I live in Central Florida, with my two kids. We live in an old lakehouse with an airplane hangar in the backyard, which we converted into the Ornament Girl Shop. Although making ornaments has always been my favorite craft, I used to be an avid jewelry maker, and have recently picked up beading again. I'm also a total geek about photography, web design, and online marketing.

Head Pattern Designer

Hi! I'm so delighted to be a part of the Ornament Girl design team! I happily make my home on a small farm in Kansas where I enjoy spending time with my grandkids, horses, crafting and gardening. I have a thing about collecting old rusty junk and incorporating it into my gardens and landscaping. My mother was a wonderful talented seamstress and loved sewing and quilting...and I hated it! But I did inherit her love of fabric and once I learned to make quilted ornaments (with no sewing!) I just couldn't stop making them! I really love being able to share my designs and seeing the joy and fun others get from being able to create their own beautiful ornaments!

Hello from Beautiful British Columbia, Canada! I'm so pleased to be a part of The Ornament Girl Team! I have been a quilter for many years, and came across quilted ornaments through The Ornament Girl website in 2018. Right away I knew I was hooked and have been creating no-sew quilted ornaments ever since. In my spare time I like to spend time with my family and hiking with my furbabies Bailey (my Beagle) and Sabel my (German Shepherd).

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's beautiful creations!

Life got in the way of finishing college many years ago, but now I am almost done and will have my degree in 2022. Ornamenting is my stress relief and creative outlet. I started making fabric ornaments 35+ years ago (gasp!) when I saw one at a craft show and, through an abundance of trial and error, taught myself how to make them. As life progressed, I gradually drifted away from making ornaments and focused on drawing and painting. Then, in 2007, I came across the Ornament Girl website which totally renewed my love for creating these ornaments. I am so incredibly grateful and thrilled to be part of the Ornament Girl Team!!

I'm Monica, and after stumbling onto the Ornament Girl website in 2013, it wasn’t long before every shelf and bowl in my house was filled with ornaments! It was a dream come true to officially join the OG team in 2018. It brought together so many things that I enjoy: design, crafts, art, and (of course) Christmas! When I’m not helping to create ornaments and tutorials, I enjoy spending time with my family and two cats, weaving, doing other types of fiber art projects, and traveling. One of the most unforgettable places I’ve been was the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland… beautiful!

Fabric Cutter Extraordinaire

I'm Julia, and I live in northern FL with my husband, mom and several of my precious family members. I was blessed to meet Staci Ann in 2015 when I saw one of her posts on Facebook. I had a friend who had been battling breast cancer she'd posted her beautiful Horizon of Hope Ornament for Breast Cancer. I found out that she didn't live too far from me so I gave her a call and asked if I could pick one up. Staci said of course. I loved her from the moment I met her.

I loved making the ornament, and my friend cried when I gave it to her.  In March 2016, Staci sent out a message asking to hire some help. I jumped on that bandwagon instantly. I became one of her very first employees for The Ornament Girl and continue to work for her, loving everything that I do. I guess you could call me the fabric cutting maniac. I cut pretty much all the fabric for each kit every month. I love seeing all the beautiful fabrics and how they are put together to make such gorgeous ornaments. In my spare time I love spending time with my family, listening to christian videos and of course, making ornaments.

I just adore your ornaments! I have been making these for over 20 years myself and have been following you for several years. I have bid many times on your listings on eBay without ever having any luck….but recently I was able to buy 2 of your ornaments on sale at Etsy. I am very happy to finally be a proud owner of 2 of your ornaments. Thanks, they are lovely and I will treasure them always.

  7. Michele Beran on February 20, 2012 at 7:15 pm

    Dear Staci Ann,
Just wondering, how do you go about filling a big order? What happens when fifty people all want the same ornament? Do you just sell your ornaments through etsy online or do you go to craft shows/fairs as well.

    • ornamentgirl on February 23, 2012 at 10:34 am

Hi Michele…I have been wanting to do some craft shows in the past, but I have never been able to build up enough inventory at once..I hope I can do one this year though, in the fall. Right now, I sell through etsy, and through orders directly through my website (if someone emails me asking for a specific ornament not currently available in the etsy shop). I generally don’t get huge orders of the same ornament all at once…if someone does happen to make a large order, they most often want a variety, in which case I usually am able to fill. Otherwise, if one particular ornament is really popular, I just do my best to keep re-stocking it in my shop as fast as I can. :)

  8. Robin Purdy on February 20, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    Hi Staci Ann,

I just have to tell you how truly beautiful your ornaments are! I love them all! I recently started selling my fabric crafts on Etsy too and love it. I make ornaments too…but nothing as fabulous as yours! You are so talented and I am so glad I found your site. Keep up the good work.

    Hi!
Your ornaments are gorgeous! What type/size of cord do you use and where can I get some?

    • ornamentgirl on May 19, 2012 at 2:01 am

Thanks, Larissa :) Are you talking about the cord I used in this ornament?: braided trim ornament. If so, that was a 1/8″ trim, and I found it at Michael’s. I’ve also seen similar trims available by the yard at JoAnn’s though. Hope this helps!

    • ornamentgirl on December 20, 2012 at 7:35 am

      Hi Linda,
Someone commented on another of my posts and told me about these: http://www.enasco.com/product/W02822. It’s the absolute cheapest I’ve seen so far. I haven’t bought them myself yet, but am planning to once I need to replenish my supply.

Usually I have bought them at WalMart (they are around $2.40 for 450 count).

I hope this helps, and I am glad to hear that you enjoyed making the ornament!

  14. susie jefferson on January 13, 2013 at 2:03 pm

I have a question about the styrofoam ball you use in the quilted ornament. Do you only recommend the textured type or can the smooth ones be used as well?

  15. Nikki on January 29, 2013 at 1:53 am

Hi Staci Ann…I am having a great deal of difficulty printing a copy of the tutorials I received with my ornament order in November. The problem lies with my printer, certainly not the tutorials themselves. Is it possible to purchase a hardcopy of each tutorial directly from you? Thanks so much!

    • ornamentgirl on January 29, 2013 at 9:24 pm

Hi Nikki… I actually don’t have printed copies of the tutorial, but I could figure out exactly what my cost would be to print you out one. The only problem is that I don’t have the best printer and I’m not sure the quality would be that great… Did you happen to check with Staples or somewhere like that to find out if they could do it?

      • Nikki on January 30, 2013 at 3:52 am

Sounds like we’re in the same boat with our printers! I’ll check with my local Staples to see if they can help. Thanks, Staci Ann.

You are quick to take money which you did 6-27-13. It is now 7-31-13 & nothing has been shipped. Where is my money for order #1876? Maybe a refund is in order. I expected a box with 2 ornament kits & directions ordered but there is a big zero from you. What is the deal??????

    • ornamentgirl on August 2, 2013 at 9:47 pm

      Hi Sandra,
I am truly sorry that your order did not arrive to you. Did you send me an email about this? I would have certainly checked into this much sooner if I had known. I will check on the status of your kits and get right back to you by email (and I will send you a refund if that’s what you prefer). Again, I am really sorry the kits didn’t get to you. -Staci

  17. Debbie on September 10, 2013 at 12:41 pm

Hi Staci Ann, I have been having a really hard time with my account. I tried everything I could think of to get some info on the military ornaments, and then today I tried to log in. Of course, as soon as I started to put my email address in your automated system did it all for me, and accurately. But then it said it was an invalid email address and wasn’t in your system. Do you sell the military ornaments or the patterns, and if so how much? I’d like them for our American Legion Post. Thank you, and I hope you can help me find out what I’m doing wrong!

    • ornamentgirl on September 10, 2013 at 10:32 pm

Hi Debbie… I’m so sorry for all the trouble. I actually do sell the finished ornaments OR the patterns, whichever you are interested in. The military ornaments are each $30. The pattern those ornaments are based on is the Snow Globe pattern, and is $10 (which is right here: http://www.theornamentgirl.indiemade.com/product/snow-globe-quilted-ornament-pattern-tutorial-how-make-quilted-ornament). And, I also have kits, which include all materials, and the PDF pattern, and the cost for that is $19.95. (For the kits, if you’re ordering more than one, I will discount the additional kits since you wouldn’t need multiple copies of the pattern.

If you let me know which you are interested in, I’d be glad to start an order for you. And, I am sorry again for the trouble with my website… Staci

  18. Debbie on September 24, 2013 at 11:31 am

Hi Staci Ann, I want to thank you for getting back to me about your Patriotic ornaments. I have a few questions about them tho. Are you going to be doing one of The National Guard? As I told you I belong to the American Legion Post 15 in Oregon. We work with retired and disabled veterans, and we also help with what we call Boys and Girls State. Our programs go all the way from a local level to national level. I showed the ornaments to my American Legion Auxiliary President and she loved them. I told her that you said since I was planning on ordering several you offered me a discount. She asked me to tell you what Girls State is. I imagine it is in all states but in Oregon we pay for top Junior girls in our schools to go to Portland. While they are there they become every branch of government imaginable. By the end of their time at State there has actually been some bills come up that have later been voted into law. We Would like to ask your permission to buy the ornaments from you and have a Raffle for the set. We can’t sell them outright and I told her I refused to do that anyway, but WITH your permission can we raffle them for Girls State? Also, how much will you be charging us for all four branches( and possibly National Guard?) Thank you
P.S. We are having so much fun with the Glitter Ornaments!

  20. Beverly Burkhart on September 15, 2015 at 12:15 pm

It is so obvious that each and every one of your ornaments are made with love! I adore Christmas and celebrate all year long in my heart but I’ve never seen any ornaments as beautiful as yours. I am very sorry to hear of your loss…my own father passed at age 34 and I don’t think my mother worked less than three jobs at a time to raise three children. Mom gave us everything we needed from clothing to education…I received a new car for my 17th birthday with the stipulation that I make the monthly payment of $79.82. Am I giving my age away lol! Most of all mom gave us love plus great work ethics. I am so happy that you are able to do your business from home and excited to have found your page..wish I had found it sooner but God’s timing is perfect. Blessings to you and your family!

I don’t like to air complaints in such a public way, but since mid January I’ve been trying to cancel my subscription. The product is fine; I just don’t have time right now to do this. I’ve canceled using the process under (I think) the dashboard. I’ve also sent several emails to the alleged contact person but received no response. I put up with the delay in cancellation — maybe a one person-office or some similar excuse. Now I’m mad. If I don’t hear from you within a week, I’ll block the auto check payment and — given the communication within the organization — keep all the free patterns that will probably continue to ship once a month til the end of time.

Hi Karin.. It looks like your account has already been canceled, and that my support team has exchanged several emails with you about this. When you initially canceled, that month’s kit had already been shipped.. however, we did let you know that you could refuse the kit, and we would send you a refund as soon as it was returned back. However, your account WAS indeed canceled at that time, and you won’t be charged any further. As of this time, I haven’t received last month’s kit returned to me, but I will keep looking out for it if you have sent it back.

Did you need help with anything else?

    Hi Staci Ann,

Could you recommend a few books that may have set you on the right track when you were starting your business?

    Keep up the awesome ornaments!

    Best wishes,
    Margot

Staci, Thank you for the new password but it still tells me I have the wrong Password and will not let me log in. I have also tried it on my Phone, and my Ipad but it does the same thing. Are there anything we can do?

Please cancel my membership. I really enjoyed working with your great patterns and ideas. My sister and I made around 50 ornaments for family Christmas gifts. Everyone loved them. But I find that I just don’t have time for doing any right now so need to cancel for now.
    Thanks so much.

Hi Anne, wow, that is incredible that you and your sister have made so many ornaments. How wonderful! I’m so happy you’ve enjoyed your time with the club and we are sad to see you go but certainly understand. I wanted to let you know I have canceled your account for you. You’re welcome back in the future! Have a wonderful day and happy ornament-ing!

What kind of cutting items does Julia Rufer use. I use a regular Rotary Cutter and I go through so many blades and they are expensive. Also what do you use to make such precise and clean cuts ? I use a Green and also a cream cutting boards from Hobby Lobby but they cut into the boards.

Thank-you so much if you can help me,

hi Staci, it is with deep regret that i ask that you cancel my membership in the OG Club. i joined last year just before my husband was diagnosed with GBS. my focus was taking care of him during all his hospital stay and then rehab. his rehab was finished in june. this disease takes 18 months to fully recover. then in july he had a heart attack, another hospitalization. then in august he was diagnosed with MSSA, yet another hospitalization and another 30 days on antibiotics. needless to say last year was not such a good one. with all of this, my ornament kits kept piling up. this year, i myself was in er twice in february, then two weeks ago was diagnosed with Afib. so, now i have 15 kits that i have not been able to download or read or look at. hoping i can still retrieve all the downloads and videos to all those kits. i love your creativity, you and your team are awesome. your are all in inspiration. thank you for all you do. i look forward to your inspire series every day. i hope too, that i will be able to order a kit, or a pattern, etc. thank you for everything. be safe, be healthy and God bless. hugs, Jeanette (jan)

    To everyone at Ornament Girl,

Eight years ago I had a stroke which has left my left side diminished and shaky when doing anything involving fine motor skills. My retirement business of making doll clothes for 18 inch dolls had to be ended. Searching for another hobby which would satisfy my “fabric addiction” and relieve pandemic boredom I purchased a couple of kits for no sew quilted ornaments. I was hooked. Next I searched for online videos which led me to your website.
I am now a digital member as I love touching and using scraps of material I have accumulated over the years.
Everyone who received the Basic Star ornament this Christmas absolutely love them. Wait until next year after I have learned the beautiful patterns I am learning now!
Thank you for the videos and concise written directions. Getting my left hand to cooperate is great physical therapy though I will admit I have had to redo many folds. It feels so good to accomplish something that looks so beautiful when I am finished.
Merry Christmas to you, Staci Ann, and your staff. I look forward to what 2021 will bring.

Hi Clairese, wow, everyone at the Ornament Girl is so touched by this comment of yours. You have truly made our day. THIS is why we do what we do. Because of stories like these. It’s incredible that something like a craft can mean so much to people but it really does. Never underestimate the power of crafting, right?! It’s our honor to have you part of the club. And I’m SURE your ornaments are beautiful and a blessing. Thank you again so much, from the bottom of our hearts, for sharing your love of this craft with us, and wishing us all a Merry Christmas. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas as well. And will have a blessed, happy, healthy New Year! Much love from all of us here at The Ornament Girl!

Greetings! I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your creative videos on YouTube! My mom passed away many years ago. I was recently cleaning out the family home and discovered her wedding dress in a box in the attic. After hanging onto it for a while, I decided to use the dress to create Christmas ornaments as family keepsakes. I’ve been following your tutorials (especially the Star shaped one) and creating some amazing ornaments. I’m using the satin, lace, lining, and netting as different textures with some pearl pins and white ribbon for the topper / hanger.

They are coming out great and everyone is impressed. I’m still working on this and will try some of your other ornament designs. It’s been a labor of love for me and now my family will have these ornaments to remember my mom!

    • Janelle - Ornament Girl Support on January 13, 2021 at 9:02 pm

Oh how wonderful! I’m so happy our videos have helped you in this beautiful tribute to your mom. I’m sure they’re turning out just lovely! Thank you for sharing this with us, Joe! Have a great day and happy ornamenting!

Hi Staci. Do you still have the VIP membership? I see the cost of the digital online but not the cost of the VIP. Could you let me know the cost? I love making your ornaments and have enjoyed all the patterns I have ordered. I have made close to 50 (lots I plan on gifting).I have 24 waiting for ribbons and hangers (the most important part) but my least favorite to do. I will just have to set an afternoon aside and just make myself finish the beautiful balls. I love your site and am so glad I found you!! Thanking you in advance for answering my question. One of these months I hope you will have an openning in the VIP club.

    • Janelle - Ornament Girl Support on March 1, 2021 at 12:39 pm

Hi Annie, the VIP club has been $29 per month. I’m not sure when we will reopen the VIP club but we do open the digital from time to time and we also have our Christmas Club, too. I believe the next opening for that club will be November of this year. Are you on the waiting list for both clubs? I can add your email to them if you’d like and you’ll be emailed when we reopen the clubs. Thanks so much for your interest! I hope you have a nice day.

  37. Ruth Sinclair on May 6, 2021 at 7:55 pm

Where are the material requirements for the May Christmas Club Ornament? I received the kit and have access to the video instructions but I’m looking for the sheet listing the materials used, quantity and sizes so if we want to make more we can get the supplies.

    Hi ladies!!!

Thank you for putting the teams bio’s on the webpage. Its so nice to put the faces with the names. It makes it so much more personal.

Last year I started making and selling plastic ornaments
as part of our 2nd adoption journey fundraiser. In my search for new ornament ideas for this year I stumbled across one of your designs and have fallen in love with their uniqueness.

In addition, this new hobby has become my therapy as it helps me decompress from my hectic days of driving all over south florida to take my son to endless therapies and doctors appointments associated with his autism diagnosis.

I love all the designs and do find myself addicted to searching, finding and purchasing fine quality, beautiful fabrics to make the next masterpiece.

Again, thank you to the entire team of talented women!

    Laura

Merry Christmas Staci Ann! Thank you so much for the thoughtful and extremely useful measuring tape! And for the music list! My personal favorite Christmas song is “Mary, Did You Know”. A bazillion people have recorded it, but my favorite version is by the One Voice Children’s Choir. You can find it on YouTube…you won’t regret the few seconds it takes to look it up. Enjoy, and have a very Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year! ???? ~ Liz Weber

Hi, I was wondering it there is anywhere on this site that tells you how to use other size balls I have some 2.9 and some 3.8 does the fabric size change or just the width of rows?

  45. Maureen Horst on April 8, 2022 at 1:53 pm

Hello, Maureen here I have an issue concerning the small pkg of string we use to make the angel heads. This last pkg i ordered was real short, I was only able to wrap 3/4 of the way up the head. this does not look right. I was only given about a half a yard, you might want to take a good look at your store stock. I thought we were to have enough for head and wings and hanger. Please look into this.

  46. Jan Brantley on April 28, 2022 at 7:20 am

Hello Staci Ann, I Love your beautiful ornaments and know you must be really busy running your business. I was wondering if you did custom orders? My mother passed away and I have her wedding dress and saw your ornaments on Pinterest and thought this would be the perfect way to honor her memory. I would love to give my sister, brother, nieces and nephew all an ornament (that’s 8, plus 2 – one for me and one for her BFF if possible) 10 in total. I would be eternally grateful! Thank you so much for your consideration and have a Great Day! Jan Brantley

    • Sarah Cinocco on April 28, 2022 at 12:06 pm

      Hi Jan,
We are so very sorry to hear about your mother! What a beautiful gift for your family. I’m so sorry, but we don’t do custom orders for finished ornaments at this time. We do have several patterns if you think you might try to take on that project yourself though. We hope you find a truly special way to memorialize your mother. Let us know if you have any questions about the patterns or getting started.

  47. Carol LaPlante on May 9, 2022 at 4:44 pm

    Hi Staci,
My Question: I may have to cancel my subscription due to my husband’s health. Will I still have access to the video instructions to complete ornament kits already purchased but haven’t been able to finish yet. You told Janelle she would have lifetime access to patterns already purchased but you didn’t mention anything about videos needed to complete projects. Really would like to complete kits when husband is well again.

    • Sarah Cinocco on June 22, 2022 at 3:21 pm

Hi Teresa, I checked your account information and you do own all 3 patterns that we have done for the challenge so far. I hope you are enjoying them!

  50. Julia on July 9, 2022 at 5:27 am

Loving the ornament patterns but have a question on fabric. What do ya’ll use? I have mostly Hobby Lobby fabric, cotton, fairly thin. Works okay but not nice and “thick” like the fabrics you use.

    • Sarah Cinocco on July 11, 2022 at 10:12 am

Hi Julia, we are so glad you are enjoying the patterns! We usually use quilting cotton or ribbon. We have used fabrics from all over the place including thinner fabrics from Hobby Lobby and Joann fabrics. Since you are folding the fabric, thinner fabrics work really well. If you are looking for a place to start with quilting cotton, I would suggest the brand Moda. You can find that at most quilt shops. I hope that helps and happy ornament-ing!
