Not long after I began selling my "quilted" ornaments (in quotes, because they aren't really quilted....they are NO SEW), I started having a hard time keeping up with the demand.... and then people started asking me to teach them how I made them. I hesitated to create a tutorial because the old-fashioned technique has been around for so long, but....

I make mine a little differently (after more than 20 years of experience), and everyone wanted to know exactly what I was doing to get such crisp, perfect lines.

For years, I've sold these instructions as an eBook (it's still for sale, right HERE).

But now, I've got a 3-part Video Workshop. And it's FREE!

You can watch it on YouTube right below. BUT... if you'd like to also receive a Printable Shopping List and Online Supply Buying Guide (with links to all my favorite places to buy supplies!), CLICK HERE. I'll send it all right to your email!

You can make these out of almost any kind of material you can dream up (fabric, ribbon, keepsake baby clothes, even paper), and for virtually any holiday or special occasion. They also make perfect gifts for not just Christmas, but for things like wedding and baby showers (personalize them with matching colors and materials), birthdays, and even sports teams. The possibilities are literally endless. (Here's a gallery of ideas.)

If you decide you would like to try making one of these ornaments yourself, and have any questions at all about the process, or anything else related to quilted ornaments, please feel free to leave your question in the comment section right below this post..... or you can email me from THIS PAGE. I will be glad to answer all questions as best I can!

In case you are wondering...

Q: These look complicated! Will I actually be able to make one?

A: Not just one; you'll make lots! Honestly, they look wayyy more complicated than they actually are. The video workshop above will take you through every single step, from start to finish. If you can fold a piece of fabric, you can make these... I promise.

Q: Can I use your instructions to make these to sell?

A: Of course! (And they make awesome gifts, too!) The only thing that you absolutely cannot do is share, copy, or reproduce my instructions, in whole or in part, in any way. (It's against the law, of course.)

Do you have any other questions? I have a list of Frequently Asked Questions right HERE, and if you're still wondering about something, you can let me know below in the comments, or feel free to contact me...I'll be glad to help if I can.

I have purchased your tutorial for the quilted ornaments and am loving making them. I’m trying my hand at the ribbon ones using the 1 1/2 ribbon but it’s not enough to cover for the center at 3″. You mentioned you cut them a little longer. What size are you cutting them? Thanks for your help.

    • Staci Ann Lowry on October 23, 2014 at 11:11 pm

Hi Roxy! I’m so glad you like the tutorial. I just replied to your email a little while ago about the ribbon sizes. Let me know if you can send me a picture so I can see what’s happening. Thanks so much! :)

  2. Lorri Kemp on October 21, 2014 at 1:49 am

Do any of your patterns include customizing the ornament? I want to print onto fabric my own picture for the center of the ornaments.

    • Staci Ann Lowry on October 23, 2014 at 11:19 pm

Hi Lorri…. The pattern doesn’t include the printing onto fabric part, but I do have a pattern that will show you how you can center a piece of fabric in the center, which is perfect for photos that you’ve printed onto fabric yourself. You can read about the pattern right here: https://theornamentgirl.com/blog/being-crafty/quilted-ornament-pattern/

Let me know if you have questions! :)

Just finished my first ornament. I think I did a pretty good job and can’t wait to start another one tomorrow. They will make beautiful Christmas presents. Your instructions were so easy to follow and when I messed up trying to download the pattern you quickly got me set up to go again. I am so thrilled with the tutorial and look forward to following your site. Lastly, the pictures helped me choose my fabrics. I will send photos when I finish a few more.

    Thanks again,

I have the Easter egg ornament and and really like it but I want to make round ornaments for Christmas are the fabric dimensions different?

    • Staci Ann Lowry on December 3, 2014 at 8:42 pm

Hi Karen…. Yes, they are just about the same. You can easily take the same basic technique from the egg, and transfer it to a round ball. :)

  14. Chris Smith on December 29, 2014 at 1:21 am

I just finished my first quilted ornament and love it! Directions were easy to follow. My question is how to connect a ribbon to be able to hang it. Will sticking a pin through the ribbon stay in the ball? I am afraid it is to heavy and the pin will pull out.
Can’t wit to start my next ornament!

    • Staci Ann Lowry on December 30, 2014 at 1:21 am

Chris, you should have received a bonus tutorial for adding that hanging ribbon, and I’m so sorry… it sounds like you never got that one. I’m emailing it to you right now. I hope that helps you, and thank you! (Oh, and so glad that you found the instructions easy to follow!)

I added the Easter egg pattern to my cart. How domI purchase it? I could not find where to check out?

    • Staci Ann Lowry on January 8, 2015 at 10:41 pm

Hi Linda… Usually a little “shopping bag” icon will appear in the lower right corner of your screen, as soon as you’ve added something to your cart. Do you happen to see that icon in the lower right corner of your screen? It’s not a very large icon… please let me know if it’s not there. I apologize for the trouble!

  19. Joni on January 23, 2015 at 7:08 am

Hello, I purchased all your patterns. Do you have any measurements available for the styrofoam balls that are about 4″? Just wondering. Thanks so much.

    • Staci Ann Lowry on February 10, 2015 at 3:16 am

Hi Joni…. I’m so sorry for the delay in my reply! For a larger sized ball, you have a couple of different options. The first option is to cut your fabric rectangles a little longer (about another 1/2″ or so), so that when you fold the sides down into triangles, the triangles are larger and cover a larger area. This way, you can put a little bit more space between your “rows”, to cover the larger ball. Another option is to just add extra rows. The great thing about these ornaments is that they are so versatile, and you can really do as many rows, as close together or as far apart, as you’d like! A friend of mine made me a large ornament a couple of years ago, and she did this….added lots of extra rows….. and the result was really gorgeous and intricate.

I hope that helps, and thank you!!

  20. Melanie. Boles on January 31, 2015 at 1:53 am

My question is whether the Christmas ball tutorial. And he egg toutorial are the same 40 page download.

    • Staci Ann Lowry on February 4, 2015 at 8:38 am

Hi Melanie…. Nope, they are separate tutorials. However, those two are made using a similar technique….. the difference is in the fabric placement and pattern. :)

  21. Joni on February 7, 2015 at 5:43 am

Still waiting for reply to my question above on January 23. :-) Thanks in advance.

    • Staci Ann Lowry on February 10, 2015 at 3:17 am

Joni, I just replied….I apologize for the delay!

  22. George on February 8, 2015 at 9:46 pm

My question is can you use ribbon to make the Quilted Tree Ornament?
My wife is addicted to your tutorials and has purchased several. The “free you tube” ones
can not compare to the ones you do!!!
    Can’t wait to see more!!!

    • Staci Ann Lowry on February 10, 2015 at 3:22 am

Thank you so much, George, that makes my day!

Yes, you can use ribbon for the trees. The process would be similar to folding the ribbon for the regular quilted ball ornaments (does your wife have the bonus tutorial that shows how to use wired ribbon? If not, let me know, and I’ll send it!)….. The only difference is, for the quilted ball ornaments, I usually take out any wires, but for the trees, I have found that it’s easier to leave the wire in. It helps to hold the shape of the “branches”. :)

I hope this helps, and thank you again for your comment; I so appreciate it!

    • Staci Ann Lowry on February 10, 2015 at 3:25 am

Actually, would it be okay to highlight your comment on one of my other blog pages? I’d love to “show off” what you’ve said about my tutorials. :)

      Thank you again!

You have sent me the pattern twice and I can not download it. Keeps saying there was an error when it was sent.

    • Staci Ann Lowry on February 12, 2015 at 11:03 pm

Vickey, I am truly sorry. It looks like something is going wrong in transit with this pattern. I will go ahead and send you a refund. I’m just sorry I was unable to get this pattern to you..

where did you get the material?

    • Staci Ann Lowry on March 23, 2015 at 9:43 am

Sharon, I buy fabrics from all over; a lot from JoAnns, Hobby Lobby, and local quilt shops. I also buy from eBay occasionally.

  26. Kathee Hixon on March 7, 2015 at 4:23 am

    • Staci Ann Lowry on March 23, 2015 at 9:44 am

Kathee, I just want to make sure that you received the email from my assistant, Nancy, with your pattern. Did you receive everything okay? Thanks so much!

  27. Janet Jones on March 18, 2015 at 6:45 am

Hi Staci, will the 40 pages include instructions for the four ornaments pictured?

    • Staci Ann Lowry on March 18, 2015 at 9:51 am

Hi Janet! The 4 ornaments (and all the others pictured on this page) actually follow the same pattern! They are all just made with different types of materialss and ribbons. The instructions will show you this exact pattern to follow, and once you learn it, you’ll be able to make ornaments just like the ones shown, and more. :)

I hope that helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  28. Debbie on March 20, 2015 at 11:49 am

I made these years ago with ribbon. Just purchased your pattern. Love it, I have lots of leftover quilt fabric to use. How much died you fold over before you made triangles. I’m a quilter and use to precise measurements. I’m a perfectionist too so will probably iron my edges before I start. Is it a 1/4 inch? Thanks

    • Staci Ann Lowry on March 23, 2015 at 9:42 am

Hi Debbie…. Thank you for purchasing, and I hope you enjoy making them! I just replied to your email, before I saw that you had also left a comment…. I usually fold over about 1/4 or less of the rectangle. But, if I’m working with even smaller pieces (which you might start doing too once you make a few of these and have the technique down pat), I’ll fold down as little as I can possibly get away with. :)

  29. Cindy on May 1, 2015 at 1:23 pm

Do you ever have a problem with the pins coming out of the bow and hanging ribbon when you hang the ornaments?

    • Staci Ann Lowry on May 4, 2015 at 9:16 am

      Hi Cindy…. Hi Doty,

No, I’ve never had a problem, because the pin I use to attach the hanger is usually a long pearl pin, and putting that through the multiple layers of ribbon and/or fabric has usually been plenty enough to provide a strong hold. However, if you would like to have some more security, you can always add a little dab of glue just below the hanger, right before you secure it down to the top of the ornament.

      I hope that helps! :)

  30. Debra Euler on May 6, 2015 at 12:45 pm

Please i would like to buy the book of all the ornament pattern in it please tell me how to get them

  31. Cindy Long on May 29, 2015 at 8:21 pm

    • Staci Ann Lowry on July 9, 2015 at 11:26 am

I’m so glad you like the PDF, Susan, thank you! :)

  33. Karen on July 16, 2015 at 2:10 am

Stacy, i purchased two of your tutorials. Can you tell me how much material is used for one ornament. Do I need 1/4 yard per color or less. Please email me.

    • Staci Ann Lowry on July 17, 2015 at 10:06 am

Hi Karen…. I just emailed you. You’ll need about 1/8 yard, and that’ll probably still leave you with a little extra. Thank you so much, and I hope you enjoy making the ornaments. :)

  34. Karen on July 18, 2015 at 2:10 pm

    Staci,
Some you tube videos say to cut material into 2-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ squares. If I recall your directions are for 3″ x 2″. Will it mmake a difference if they are cut 2-1/2 x 2-1/2″

    • Staci Ann Lowry on July 19, 2015 at 9:33 am

Hi Karen…. You can still use them, but I don’t prefer the squares myself. The directions that use squares usually fold them completely in half, and use the square shape to make the halves perfect. And so, half the square is essentially covered up and useless, AND the length of your folded triangle will be shorter as a result. So, less of the pattern will be actually showing on the ornament, and you’ll have to make your layers a little bit closer together to make up for that. In my pattern, I use a longer rectangle because I stagger the layers so that the ones with a patterned fabric show more (I just think it looks much nicer). With all that being said, if you’ve already cut squares, you can definitely still use them. You’ll probably just need to make your layers a little bit closer together than shown in the tutorial. I hope that helps! By the way, did you ever receive my email about the amount of fabric to use? I saw that you had also asked here on this blog, and was worried my email had wound up in spam….

      • Anonymous on July 19, 2015 at 2:57 pm

        Staci,
Thanks for the information on that. As to your question, no I never received your email about the yardage.
I looked in my spam folder but it was not there either. Last week I received an email for you in my regular mail so there would not be a problem.

On another note – or quick question, when using ribbon for the layers on the ornaments instead of material, does it have to be the 2-1/2″ width or can 1-1/2″ inch be used.
        Thanks

        • Staci Ann Lowry on July 22, 2015 at 11:21 am

Hi Karen…. I don’t think you are getting my email replies. The email you did receive from me last week was from my newsletter list, which is a different email address…. that may be why you received that one, and not the others I’ve sent.

In case you didn’t get the last one…. yes, you can use the 1 and 1/2″ width. I use them often. In fact, when I use the wider 2 and 1/2″, I cut them in half lengthwise, to get more mileage out of it… that makes those pieces even thinner than 1 and 1/2 (and they still work).

          Hope that helps! :)

  35. Mary Farnell on September 19, 2015 at 5:41 am

Are there directions somewhere for substituting ribbon for the accent fabric in the Quilted Ornament Tutorial? I love that look but cant find any information on using the ribbon.

    • Staci Ann Lowry on September 20, 2015 at 12:34 pm

Hi Mary….. Yes, this e-Book comes with a bonus tutorial that shows how to use ribbon instead of fabric. You can use all ribbon, or combine both ribbon & fabric together. :)

  36. Cynthia Ische on October 3, 2015 at 11:13 am

Hi there: I purchased your bundled ‘complete collection’ of patterns for $60 and am starting to look through them. I love them all and can’t decide on a favorite. The pinecone and tree ones seem to catch my eye the most, but again…they are all lovely. Could you give me your opinion and a ranking of difficulty level on them? Is there one you suggest I start with over the others just to get the hang of it? I will check your FAQ section also. Thanks!

    • Staci Ann Lowry on October 4, 2015 at 3:35 pm

Hi Cynthia… thank you for purchasing my bundle!!

I would recommend starting with the Basic Quilted Ball pattern. I think it’s the easiest to start with because it has the least amount of layers out of all the folded fabric ornaments. There’s also more room for error as you’re learning it. :)

I hope that helps, and thank you again!

    • Staci Ann Lowry on December 13, 2015 at 4:42 pm

Hi Cindi…. Yes, absolutely. Just increase your rectangle size by an inch. You can also add an extra layer to each side as well if you want to. :)

Would these work for an 7 year old to make? She sews and does lots of other crafty things.

Hi there…. While the technique is certainly easy enough, my only concern is the fact that these ornaments contain a lot of straight pins. So, it is really up to you if you feel that would be an issue or not. :)

Hello Staci, I made my first….My first sides looks pretty….but on the first side it went past half way on the ball…thus making my 2nd side lap over…I cannot figure out what I am doing.my sizes are correct, that was the first thing I checked. Have you made a video of the process yet?

Hi Brenda… it is actually totally okay if your first half covers more than half of the ball a little bit. (in fact, it usually will). When you do your second side, you’ll just end up having to overlap that fabric a little. On that very last layer of the second side, you’ll need to trim a bit, as shown in the eBook. Does that help? Please let me know.

Another question, I just purchased the set again in case you had new directions. But looking at the pics it seems it is about a quarter inch turn down…thus about 1 3/4 left to work with, then on the instructions for using ribbons you say to use 1 1/2 ribbon…
I realize you do not turn it down but this is still a difference in the width your working with.
I did find that the balls I purchased where 2.8 in size not 3. Sorry my mistake.

With fabric, I do usually turn the pieces down *about* a third of the way. However, you don’t need to be exact at all with this part. And, that’s why using the more narrow ribbon still works. The width is not as important in my opinion, as the length. Yes, it does have to be wide enough to do the job, but with ribbon you can get away with pretty narrow, because of the fact that you aren’t turning it down. But the most important point of all this is not to get stuck on how far to turn down your fabric, and the overall width – that part CAN vary. :) I hope that helps, and thank you!
