It's the NINTH week of the Christmas Challenge, and we are doing the...

Pine Cone Pattern.

The Pine Cone Pattern is one of the oldest OG patterns, and guess what... we've now made the video tutorial FREE.

If you'd like the eBook too (it shows several variations for making Pine Cones), of course that is always available, and it's at a special low price for the next 3 days.

BUT.. you don't need it to make the square fold variation shown in the free video, and like the one you see at the top of this blog post.

The ornament below used an 8-lined egg, and follows the Vertical Stripes instructions... each new row is staggered to the left in order to create a swirled look.

And this Pine Cone was also made on an egg, but with a random fabric placement.

Your turn!

When you make this ornament, please don't forget to share it with me and the other Challengers! You can share it on Instagram using the hashtag #OrnamentGirlsChallenge so we can all see it!

(And, if you're an Ornament Girls Club Member, please post it in our private FB group!)

I'll see ya in a week, with Challenge Pattern #10. (Make sure you're on my email list!)

Happy Ornamenting!

Staci Ann

p.s. If you bought your foam ahead of time based on the Supply List I gave you, this is the week that uses either a round ball, or egg (I used an 8-lined egg). But, don't worry if you don't have a pre-lined egg... this one can either be done on a ball or egg, without lines, if you're using the free video version of this pattern.

Is one of the variations on how to useour 3 challenge fabrics? It looks like the main video is only using 2 colors.

      Hi Carol,

So the Pine Cone pattern doesn’t specifically have a 3 color variation. Staci Ann did hers in a swirl. Monica and Darlene spaced their 2nd and 3rd colors randomly.

The video tutorial shows how to add random colors in.

And another team member (Sarah), she just started each row with color 2 and then the next row color 3.

For Staci Ann’s swirl, this is what she told us: Staci Ann made hers using the reverse triangle method for vertical rows, but she staggered each piece to the left one space, rather than keeping them in their same position all the way down the egg.

I hope this helps you with an idea of how you want to approach this challenge? And if you need anything else, please do let us know. We are also happy to help you further via email as well: https://ornamentgirls.com/contact/

Thank you and have a great holiday season!

If you make this on the 3 inch ball ,how many fabric squares will you need? Thanks!

Hi Patti, the ebook says to use 90-100 2″ squares, it looks like in the ebook, it is made on a ball. Thanks so much and if you need anything else, please let me know! I’m happy to help. Have a great day.

For the challenge ornament, Vertical Stripes instructions, are the instructions only available in the eBook?
    Thank you, Diane

I don’t know about “only” in the e-book, but they are on pg 17 of the book.

Staci, thank you for posting the extra videos showing how you did the swirled pine cone. Once I understood how to start the swirl, I was “off to the races”. I did the triangle fold and for the uppermost part of my egg, I cut the rectangles in half and did the smaller triangle fold. For the final rounds I folded the sides in on the triangles and was able to use just one pin to hold each modified triangle in place. My bow easily covered that last pin. I used 16 pieces each of two colors and 32 pieces of my third color, spacing the tips of the triangles about 1/2″ apart. Hope you’ll update the printed pattern and hope this info helps others. Best to you all, Diane
