I’ve got a quilted ornament idea for you: make your own custom baby’s first Christmas quilted ornament, by embroidering a name, year, or whatever else you’d like it to say, onto a piece of fabric, and then centering it in the middle of the ornament.

(If you don’t know how to make a quilted ornament, my Snow Globe pattern will show you how to make one, step by step, with a centered picture like this.)

I made this one a couple of years ago for some friends, to match the colors and theme of their new baby’s nursery. (And an even better idea… you could use an actual blanket or crib sheet as your fabric!)

The baby’s bedding had pictures of little buttons all over it, so I stitched a few buttons with some brown thread to make them look like the buttons on the sheets, and then glued them around the ornament.

I kept this ornament pretty simple, but the possibilities for these are literally endless. Do you have any ideas for ways to decorate a quilted ornament for a Baby’s First Christmas? Please tell me!

Do you have instructions for the embroidered part of the ornament.

Fran, I don’t have a pattern for that part. I did this embroidery with my sewing machine. You could really put anything you wanted in the center though. Whatever fabric you do use in the center would just need to be around 3 inches square, with the actual picture that you’re showcasing (a print, embroidery, cross stitching, etc..) about 2 inches big.

I don’t use mine as much as I would like, but it does come in handy sometimes. It does only small embroidery, but that works out for these ornaments. :)

Great ornament! I love doing baby ornaments. I don’t have an embroidery machine so I personalize mine using fabric, freezer paper and my inkjet printer. BTW I placed Honorable Mention in the State Fair of Texas for my snow globe ornament entry of a Christmas ornament for Texas A & M University!! Next year will do a more Christmas-y ornament!! I will send you pictures if both!

Oh I can’t wait until I can buy the patterns I want to get. Especially to make this one for my great nephew that was born last month. Do they make quilted fabric that are printed maps? I’d like to try that to match his room decor. My brother moved his family to Germany over 20 years ago as a missionary, so his 4 youngest kids were born there. The 2 oldest were babies when they moved so they traveled all through Europe on missions and guess that’s how my niece chose his decor. I get to see the oldest 3 girls now and my oldest nephew comes to Texas about every 6 months. I always gave them Texas branded gifts thru the years so they would know their roots. Do you think it would be easy to make it look like the Texas Flag? *I would like to make each one something of the sort, and my great nieces pretty pink ones. I really need to stop looking as the day is flying by, but your ornaments mesmerize me.

Do you use interfacing under the center piece when you machine embroider these?
